Health Level 7
HL7 or Health Level 7 is a form of XML that is standard in the electronic medical world. This is not just for software but for hardware as well. It was created to provide a means for interoperability in the medical community between different technologies. The group that created HL7 is like most things in the electronic medical world created by a non profit group and not the federal government. Although there are federal laws that needed to be followed and HL7 was created in order to support some of these laws. HL7 has allowed for the interoperability between electronic Patient Administration Systems (PAS), Electronic Practice Management (EPM) systems, Laboratory Information Systems (LIS), Dietary, Pharmacy and Billing systems as well as Electronic Medical Record (EMR) or Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems. Currently, HL7’s messaging standard is supported by every major medical information systems vendor in the United States and is a requirement to pass some CCHIT certification on the software side of things. All this was created with the end goal in mind of true communication not only of hardware but of software as well so that one day patients may save an electronic copy of medical records and take them to the doctor of choice. However because of the slow adoption of Electronic Medical Records in the USA this goal seems far off.
